Googoosh is a legendary Iranian singer and actress whose career spans over 60 years across music and film officially announced her retirement from touring in the Fall of 2023.
She’s currently on the road with her final world tour “Final Chapter”.
Her social and cultural impact amongst Iranian’s and other Farsi speaking countries has given her the title of “Iran’s Daughter”.
Born in 1950s Tehran to a renowned actor and acrobat, Googoosh spent her childhood immersed in the performing arts.
Charismatic by nature, she managed to assemble an awestruck crowd at every turn; mesmerizing audiences with her inspiring musical aptitude.
By her teenage years, Googoosh was regularly singing publicly- embossing beloved melodies of established musicians such as Ghazal, Delkash, Elaheh and others with her own uniquely riveting twist.
In 1966, she released her first single “Ghesseh Vafa” which to this date is the highest selling record in Iranian history.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she played and stared in numerous successful blockbuster films as well as winning the most prestigious “Sepas” award considered to be the Iranian version of the Oscar’s in 1971.
This monumental opportunity was the catapult of Googoosh’s musical career – propelling her into a blazing spotlight that would soon make her a household name and take her around the world, leading to headlined numerous music festivals alongside notable artists such as Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Charles Aznavour, Silvy Vartan, Sacha Distel, Romina Power, Julien Clerc, Patty Pravo, Emel Sayen and Ajda Pekan. She performed at music festivals in France, Italy and Tunisia and had a month-long sell out run in Paris in 1971. Googoosh was awarded the Special Cultural Medal of Tunisia in 1973 and was the only Iranian artist signed to European record companies Barclay of France and RCA of Italy. She recorded songs in English, French, Spanish and Italian, widening her reach and appeal to new audiences previously unfamiliar with her work in her native country.
Googoosh quickly became the most prolific performing and recording artist in Iran, releasing over 150 records between the years of 1966 and 1979.
After the Islamic revolution of Iran in 1979, which banned women from singing in public, she was arrested and imprisoned in Tehran under house arrest for 21 years.
Since her return to the stage in the summer of 2000, she has sold out concerts all around the globe and has performed at some of the biggest and most respected venues in the world including Madison Square Garden in New York, Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl, Air Canada Centre, The Royal Albert Hall in London, and endless others.
